Connecting to Network Drives While Using VPN in Windows

University-Owned Computer

If you are using a university-owned computer off campus or on the OSU wireless network, do the following to view your network drives.

First, make sure you are connected to the EHE VPN (view instructions on how to connect).

Check My Computer to see if your network drives are already there. If not, then do the following to make them appear.

  • Click on Start
  • Choose Run
  • Type \\hec.ohio-state.edu\netlogon\logon.vbs and click on OK
  • Click on the Open button when asked if you want to open or cancel

Your network drives should then show up under My Computer.

Personal/Home Computer

If you are using your personal/home computer to access our VPN, you will need to do the following to view your network drives.

You will need four pieces of information prior to following these steps:

  1. Name of the network drive (for example, \\bronco.hec.ohio-state.edu\priv\bbuckeye for Brutus Buckeye's P drive)
  2. Company network domain (HEC)
  3. Your EHE username
  4. Your EHE password

First, make sure you are connected to the EHE VPN (view instructions on how to connect).

Open My Computer (either from the desktop or through the Start menu).

Tools --> Map Network Drive

Click on Tools and choose Map Network Drive.

choose a drive letter and type in the folder name

Select an available (unassigned) drive letter from the list. If this is your only VPN mapped drive, using a letter like V is recommended to signify VPN as not to be confused with your traditional drive mappings (C for your hard drive, D for an optical drive, etc).

Specify the folder as provided by your network administrator. For example, if you have a P drive, it is located at \\bronco.hec.ohio-state.edu\priv in a folder with your username as its name. So, if your username was bbuckeye, you would use \\bronco.hec.ohio-state.edu\priv\bbuckeye.

Click on Finish.

You may be prompted for a username and password. Enter the username in the format "domain\username" (for example, hec\bbuckeye) . Then enter your password and click on OK.

network drive showing up under My Computer

The network drive will now show up under My Computer.

Once your login credentials are validated, you will see all the files and folders within the shared drive you have now mapped via your VPN connection to the EHE network. In order to access this drive, remember that your VPN connection must first be activated.

Note about other network drives (R drive, N drive, etc)

Department and group network drives are in a few different locations on our network (examples include bronco, inceptio, coefile, vulcan, and viking).

examples of other network drives

If you want to map one of these drives on a personal/home computer, first try to look at your list of network drives under My Computer when logged in on your work computer. Then if you can see which server your network drive is on, make note of that and use \\servername.hec.ohio-state.edu\ (where "servername" is bronco, inceptio, etc) when following the steps above.
