Mary Lynne Cox Bowman-Cowen
Adjunct professor Mary Lynne Cox Bowman-Cowen, '71, MA '71, PhD '72 of Green Valley, Az., and Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio, died in August 2007 at age 71. She retired as an associate professor of natural resources and adjunct professor of education at Ohio State.
Jack Arthur Culbertson
Adjunct professor Jack Arthur Culbertson, 89, of Columbus, died in December 2007. He was executive director of the University Council for Educational Administration from 1959-81. He taught educational administration at Ohio State through 1984. The UCEA's annual Jack A. Culbertson Award recognizes talented young professors, and he established a yearly scholarship at Ohio State.
Chalmer Gale Hixson
Professor emeritus Chalmer Gale Hixson, '37,'47 MA of Columbus, died in December 2007 at 92. At Ohio State he earned a Varsity O for diving and was invited to the 1936 Berlin Olympiad as one of 30 American physical educators. In 1943, he brought lacrosse to Ohio State, where he also developed the first "Mechanics of Three-Man Officiating" for football and basketball. In 1971 he retired as chair of the Men's Division of Physical Education. He was the OSU Stadium and St. John Arena announcer from 1951-70. From 1971-82 he was a faculty member at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Hugh D. Laughlin
Professor emeritus Hugh D. Laughlin, '37, '40 MA, '51 PhD of Hershey, Pa., died in May 2008 at age 94. A dedicated and lifelong educator, he taught in the University School and as professor of educational administration at Ohio State for 38 years.
N.L. "Mac" McCaslin
Long-time faculty member N.L. "Mac" McCaslin of Columbus died in February 2008 at age 69. He first came to Ohio State in 1971 at the former National Center for Research and Vocational Education.†He joined the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and retired as professor and chairman of the Department of Human and Community Resource Development in 2001. After his retirement, he rejoined the Center on Education and Training for Employment. He was director of the Professional Development Academy for the National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education, where he worked until his death. His wife, Barbara, was a staff member in the College of Education and at CETE.
Helen Stevens
Associate professor emeritus Helen Stevens, 84, of Columbus, died in January 2008. During World War II, she worked in a tank manufacturing plant in Lima, Ohio. Professionally, she taught in Germany and Japan before joining the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Arthur E. Wohlers
Professor emeritus Arthur E. Wohlers, MA '39, '34 PhD of Dublin, Ohio, died in May 2008 at age 94. He joined Ohio State's educational administration faculty in 1951. In 1970, he became director of educational personnel placement. He tirelessly mentored a multitude of educators in Ohio and nationwide.
1920s
- Delane Schindler Kittel, '27 of Groveport, Ohio, died in October 2007 at age 101. She taught high school and college until retiring in 1965. She was also a free-lance writer for some years, principally for the former Dispatch Magazine.
1930s
- J. Russell Coffey, '28, '33 MA of Bowling Green, Ohio, one of last remaining veterans of World War I, died in December 2007 at age 109. He was attending Ohio State when he enlisted in 1918. A baseball player and track sprinter at Ohio State, he taught high school and college before joining the Bowling Green State University physical education program in 1948. He retired in 1969.
- Marian Rhodes Sidebottom, '37 of Columbus, died in January 2008 at age 92. She was an active member of many local and civic organizations including, P.E.O., Eastern Star, Columbus Symphony and the Worthington Women's Club.
1940s
- Sue Murphy Bruce,'48 of Upper Arlington, died in January 2008. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Elizabethan Guild, Pleasure Guild, and Childhood League Board IV.
- Eileen Iva Cox, '44, '45 MA of Columbus, died in October 2007. She was 84. In the late 40's, she and her sister Eileen operated one of the first professionally managed preschools in central Ohio.
- William Peter Giovanello Jr., '41 of Columbus, died in May 2008 at age 88. He was retired as president of F&R Lazarus for Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia. While attending graduate school at Ohio State, he was called to active duty in World War II. He fought in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star. Among his later honors was Italy's Star of Solidarity Medal.
- Fred Jacoby, '43 of Dallas, Texas, a longtime college athletic administrator, died in March 2008 at age 80. He was commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1982-93, and later the Lone Star Conference and American Southwest Conference.
- Mary Cockburn Kraner, '42 of Carroll, Ohio, died in September 2007 at age 89. She taught home economics for more than 30 years at Bremen, Fairfield Union, and Carroll high schools and retired as the dietician of Bloom Carroll Schools.
- Imogene Cole Morrow, '43, '55 MA of Clearwater, Fla., died in January 2008. She was 94. A retired principal for Columbus City Schools, she had served as president of the Columbus Elementary Principals Association, the Ohio Department of Elementary School Administrators, Delta Kappa Society International and PI Lamda Theta.
- Bill Willis, '45 of Columbus, a two-time All America player and member of the 1942 National Championship football team, died in November 2007. He was 86. One of the first African Americans to be a starter in professional football, he played for the Cleveland Browns. He was a member of the OSU and Pro Football halls of fame. He became an advocate for children and retired as director of the Ohio Department of Youth Service.

- Eleanor Sherman Blue, '53 of Worthington, died in September 2007 at age 79. A member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, she was a speech and hearing therapist for West Jefferson Schools for 16 years.
- Patricia Harris Herbert, '56 of Titusville, Fla., died in November 2007 at age 73. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, the Junior League of Columbus, Women's Auxiliary of Columbus Bar Association, Symphony Club, and Pleasure Guild of Children's Hospital.
- Carolyn Gillen Pittenger, '55 of Wellston, Ohio, died in August 2007 at age 74. She was member of Chi Omega Sorority at Ohio State. She taught with the Southwestern City School District, as well as school systems for Pike and Vinton counties.
1960s
- Armand Aufdenberg, '63 of Westerville, Ohio, died in August 2007 at the age of 66. He was a teacher and administrator for 32 years with the Ohio Department of Youth Services. Early in his career, he worked with juveniles at Riverside and Scioto Village and TICO penal institutions.
- Harland Randolph, '55, MS '59, PhD '69 of Washington, D.C., the Ohio State senior class president in 1954-55, died in September 2007. He was 78. An accomplished debater, he was mentioned several times in the university's Alumni Magazine during the 1950s. He was president of Federal City College in Washington from 1969-72. He founded Ed Comment, a marketing firm, and wrote books and newspaper columns.
1970s
- Betty Temple Hinig, '49, MA '70 of Hilliard, Ohio, died in September 2007 at the age of 83. She taught in the Scioto Darby and Columbus City school districts. She was a member of the OSU Women's Golf Association, and active in civic organizations.
1980s
- Virginia Ann Bell Johnson Carey, '70, MS '84 of Columbus, died in September 2007 at the age of 58. She was a faculty member and coordinator of the Columbus State University Early Childhood Development program for more than 20 years. She was the 1999 Teacher of Teachers for the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children, project director for the Child Development Association, and president of the Ohio Coalition of Associate Degree Early Childhood Programs.
- Teresa Anne Toles Smoak, '72, MA '81 of Columbus, died in September 2007 at age 57. She was an early childhood education teacher for 35 years with the Columbus Public Schools, spending 28 of those years at Clinton Elementary School.
1990s
- Myrna H. Wilson Packard, '84 MA, '92 PhD of Milwaukee, Wis., died in November 2007. She was 70. She was taught art at Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington, and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Alverno College in Milwaukee.
