Kristin M. Hunger (MA '06) first travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) with the British Internship in Higher Education at the University of Lancaster, which is part of the college's highly ranked Higher Education and Student Affairs Program (HESA). In August 2009, Hunger, from Buffalo, New York, wrote to her advisor, Associate Professor Ada Demb, School of Educational Policy and Leadership, to share her latest employment experience.
Dear Dr. Demb:
I have some exciting news. You can probably tell from my e-mail address that I am now in the UK. In June 2009, I took a post as the newly created Residence Life Co-Ordinator at Edinburgh University. Our mission is to help highlight the importance of educating the whole student utilizing events hosted in the residence halls. As I'm one of only three full-time staff members in the Residence Life Office, ensuring that the student experience outside the classroom is educational and supportive is never a dull task.
I honestly do not think I would have been a memorable or qualified candidate if I had not been a part of the British Internship in Higher Education at Lancaster University. My experience and lessons learned there allowed me to discuss similarities and differences between the US and UK systems of education, ways that student development may be positively impacted by American Student Affairs theories, and my own experiences living abroad.
During the grand opening, Hunger led His Royal Highness on a tour of the newly completed residence hall, which has a spectacular view of the university and the city from its balconies.

I am currently loving my time here in Edinburgh. Everyone has been quite wonderful and accepting. They are even building a completely new residence hall, the John Burnett House, and my flat will be on the top floor - a penthouse! The city itself is quite exciting since it is currently [August '09] hosting the Edinburgh International Festival, three weeks of music, theater and visual arts. There is always something new and unique to experience.
I hope everything at Ohio State is going well and that this year's new HESA cohort is spectacular. I want to say thank you for offering me the opportunities that have led me to where I am today. I only hope I can make Ohio State proud through my new position.
Sincerely,
Kristin M. Hunger
