Your Career - The Long Run
It is impossible to say what the future of jobs in America will be. If you look at the past 40 years, the working life of one person and the job market has changed considerably. There are trends which can indicate the direction the job market is going, even if the future cannot be predicted.
- The time when a person would work for one employer for his or her entire career has probably passed.
- Competition for skilled employment will probably become more acute.
- The trend in recent years has seen a growth in the private sector and stagnation in the public sector.
- Those who are creative and flexible will prosper.
- Most new jobs in the private sector will be with small and medium sized firms.
- People are striking out on their own more often today.
What will your career be like? This depends upon the temperament you as an individual, your situation in life, and the state of the economy.
In the end, your career will be the result of your choices. There is no standard model which is right for everyone. If there is one message which is clear in today's economy, any long-term career plan must be extremely flexible.
