Admission requirements include a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) equivalent to at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all prior undergraduate college-level course work and GRE (General Record Exam) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) above the 60th percentile. The GRE or GMAT exams must have been taken within the past five years. These thresholds are minimum levels.
In reality, higher GPAs and GRE/GMATs are needed to be competitive for admission. For academic year 2008-2009, the average verbal and quantitative GRE of entering students was at the 75th percentile and the average on the new writing component of the GRE was 4.0. For applicants submitting GMAT, the average was also at the 75th percentile. In addition, most admitted students have an undergraduate GPA over 3.5. Admission decisions are based, however, on a student's whole record and special consideration is given to students with unique talents and backgrounds. Students whose native language is not English (and who have not received a degree from an American university) must provide TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS scores.
Students are admitted to graduate programs in the Department of Consumer Sciences for Autumn Quarter only and applications must be received by May 1st. To be fully considered for financial support, international student applications are due by November 30th and domestic student applications are due by January 15th.
