Hospitality Management

The Academic Program

In the 1890s, Ohio State was the first domestic science program in the United States to include reference to commercial food preparation. From 1900 to 1945, the Hospitality Management program established a reputation as one of the leading institutional food service management programs in the country. In 1946, Ohio State opened the Restaurant Management program, and then in 1983 the program’s name changed to Hospitality Management: Lodging and Food Service. In 1990, the program’s enrollment peaked at 325 students. Hospitality Management went through a crisis from 1992 through 1994 as the College nearly abolished it. Since 1995, the program is recovering and building again. With 176 students enrolled currently, the professors in this area are reviewing what it would take to be one of the top five hospitality management programs in the country. The hospitality industry is one of the largest employers in the United States and the State of Ohio and the City of Columbus are home to a number of food and restaurant company headquarters. In an effort to utilize industry leaders, the Hospitality Management program has engaged an advisory board.

The Goals
