Gifts to the College of Education & Human Ecology may be given in various forms, using well-recognized gift vehicles that respond to each donor's own circumstances. Below are the various donor options.
Please note that when you are ready to make a gift, you have the option of giving online. Giving to the College of Education & Human Ecology and The Ohio State University online is a safe and secure process. Of course, you may always contact Tracy Kirby at (614) 292-5538 or trkirby@ehe.osu.edu to make other arrangements.
An outright gift of cash is usually the simplest and most convenient method of giving. It is not subject to gift or estate taxes, and it can be deducted to the full extent of IRS rulings.
Pledges enable a donor to extend their giving capability and plan a personal giving program that is both convenient and tax-wise. A pledge may enable a donor to consider a more significant gift than would have been otherwise possible. Terms for payment on pledges are flexible and at the option of the donor.
Securities may be made as outright gifts or as a payment on a pledge. Stock certificates may be reassigned directly to The Ohio State University Foundation or may be transferred through the donor's broker. The mean market value on the date of the transfer will determine the value of the gift for tax purposes. It is best to consult with a Development Officer before a transaction is made. For general questions on securities, call (614) 292-2141 or send e-mail to gifts@osu.edu.
Gifts of appreciated securities may be tax deductible, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. The deduction is based on the full fair market value, and capital gains tax is not due when the stock is transferred to the university.
Almost any type of real property - a personal residence, a farm, a vacation home, a commercial building, or an undeveloped parcel of land can constitute a gift. A gift of real estate can be made either outright or through other methods. Gifts of real estate necessitate a professional outside appraisal, EPA testing, and a determination by the OSU Treasurer's Office and the Board of Trustees that the property is desirable to the university.
Many companies encourage philanthropic giving among their employees by offering to match an employee's gift with a corporate contribution. Donors interested in this opportunity should obtain the necessary matching gift form from his or her employer (usually the personnel office) and send it along with their gift to the College of Education & Human Ecology. If you have questions on whether you work for a corporate matching gift company, please contact Tracy Kirby at (614) 292-5538 or trkirby@ehe.osu.edu.
In certain instances, it may be preferable from an estate, financial and tax planning perspective to consider long-term planned giving as the best way to make a gift. This can be accomplished through various gift instruments, such as charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, and bequests. For more information on planned giving, contact Jim Hoobler or Mary Ann Esber.
