The program also provides a rigorous and nationally ranked graduate education led by scholars who are leaders in their fields. We take a great deal of pride in our program and pride in our graduates who have gone on to become leaders in schools, community organizations, and other educational contexts.

Ma Structure

The Structure of the Program

This structure and content of the M.A. aims to broaden and deepen perspectives around four areas central to high quality education for all children: the nature of learners and learning, pedagogy, disciplinary content, and diversity, social justice, and educational equity.

A blend of theory and practice, the program is composed of core courses as well as foci of study which allow individual student's to pursue specific interests and needs. The degree culminates with a focused and guided final project which is negotiated between the advisor and student.


Foci of Study

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in the School of Teaching and Learning is a post-baccalaureate degree that serves practicing teachers at all levels (preschool, elementary, middle level, and high school) and provides an important first step for graduate students who wish to pursue a doctorate and become scholars and teachers at the university level. It also provides a base for other professionals who are interested in offering educationally-related services in a wide variety of social and educational settings outside the public schools. Such settings may include social service fields which provide educational programs and services for children and young adults; education departments of art, history, and science museums; and educational service programs connected with park and recreational systems. Flexibility in related coursework permits students to develop an interdisciplinary perspective as well as depth in one of the following foci of study:


The M.A. program is designed to broaden perspectives on learning, curriculum, instruction, and assessment in educational settings. A blend of theory and practice, the program is composed of core courses as well as specialized courses tailored to the individual student's interests and needs. Each student will be assigned a faculty adviser who will provide guidance throughout the program and will help in planning individual programs centered around the student's area of interest.
