Master of Arts (M.A.) in
Multicultural Education Focus of Study
Purpose
The Multicultural Education Focus of Study prepares teachers and other professionals to assume leadership roles in school districts, colleges, universities and other institutions around issues of equity and diversity. The program is also designed to respond to the needs of classroom teachers who wish to gain the knowledge and skills needed to integrate their curricula with multicultural content, teach from a social justice orientation, or align their pedagogical approach with the strengths and needs that children from diverse communities bring to the educational context.
Students pursuing this focus of study may:
- Focus on a variety of topics, content areas, or issues within the broad field of multicultural education, or
- Combine a multicultural focus with content/developmental area (literacy, early childhood, etc.).

The above courses represent a mix of graduate courses appropriate for students at both the masters' and doctoral level. Other seminars represented by 925 numbers are offered each quarter and will be posted on the T&L website.
Final Projects
Students in the Multicultural Education Focus of Study design their final projects with their advisors.
These projects include:
- Developing a selected list of multicultural children's literature titles and rationale for their inclusion in a curricular focus.
- Implementing and analyzing a study based on principles of culturally relevant teaching
- Developing a series of workshops for teachers to introduce critical issues in developing curriculum for student from economically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
