Master of Education (M.Ed.)
Program in Early Childhood Education

This program is one in which faculty and students are committed to working for social justice and diverse learning opportunities for all children. The program is designed to support the development of exemplary teachers who:

Persevere: and are committed to the academic achievement of all children and assume responsibility for finding the best ways to teach.

Know Themselves: and examine their social and cultural experiences in order to identify the strengths, as well as the limits of their experiences and actively develop social and cultural competence across diverse social contexts.

Know Their Children: and pursue knowledge of their children’s cultural, familial, and community experiences, listening to and observing children closely enough to share their understanding of the world in order to construct learning experiences that help them acquire critical, social, political, and subject-matter knowledge and skills.

Advocate: and critique what they are “told to do” in light of what is best for children and find ethical places to do it.

Pursue Excellence in Teaching: and build content knowledge and continuously improve their pedagogies with an appreciation for how children develop.

Work For Social Justice: and take action to improve the world; collaborate with children, families, educators, and the larger community to promote opportunities for all children.

The M.Ed. Early Childhood teacher preparation program is a full-time graduate program that begins in the summer and may be completed in four quarters. The program includes graduate level coursework, field placement (preschool and elementary) and student teaching (preschool and elementary). Successful completion of these three major components, leads to a master’s degree in early childhood education and the initial Ohio teacher licensure for preschool and grades K-3. Placements for student teaching include preschool and elementary schools throughout Franklin County.
