Master of Education (M.Ed.) Program in
Technology Education

Purpose

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) teacher preparation program is a full-time graduate program that begins in the summer and continues through July of the following summer. The program may take longer if the content course work is not completed prior to entry. Successful completion of the program leads to both the master’s degree and initial Ohio teacher licensure in technology education (grades 4-12). The M.Ed. includes a coherent series of interdisciplinary core courses, content-specific courses, a research and inquiry component, field experiences, a clinical practicum, and a culminating project focused on critical issues in education. The University faculty works closely with the Franklin County Schools and other school-based professionals to prepare new teachers. For licensure in Ohio passing the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching 5-9 or 7-12 test is required. This is usually done about the time student teaching starts.

Application

The deadline for application is December 1 of the year preceding admission. It is expected that applicants will complete an undergraduate program of study in technology education or a related field prior to beginning the M.Ed. The application portfolio includes a resume, a personal statement of intent explaining the applicant’s motivation to teach, transcripts, a plan for completing any prerequisite courses not already completed, GRE scores and three letters of recommendation from people who can speak to the applicant’s general character and desire to become a teacher.

Costs

In addition to the cost of tuition and course materials, there are several other costs associated with the M.Ed. program and it’s important to budget for them. Please be aware that any of the costs listed here are subject to change without notice.

The application fee for the M.Ed. program is $40. In addition, M.Ed. interns are required to subscribe to OSU’s data collection system called TK20. The one-time cost for this subscription is $103 and is payable during the first quarter of enrollment.

Before placement in schools for clinical field experiences students must have a background check done by the BCI/FBI and have no criminal convictions that would not allow licensure in Ohio. This can be done at any police department, but the OUS Campus Police department is recommended. The cost is $51. A list of criminal offenses that would prohibit licensure is available from the Ohio Department of Education (link is http://www.ode.state.oh.us/GD/Templates/Pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3&TopicRelationID=520&ContentID=13542&Content=86437)

For licensure you are also required to take the PRAXIS II PLT, which costs $80. Currently Ohio does not require the Technology Education subject/content area PRAXIS test but it is considering requiring it.
