Application Deadlines:

The admissions process consists of two annual application cycles leading to matriculation in Fall Quarter and Spring Quarter.

Students seeking funding (assistantships, fellowships) are encouraged to seek Fall Quarter admission.

  1. Fall Quarter admission: Application deadline is November 30. Notification will occur by March 15.
  2. Spring Quarter admission: Application deadline is September 1. Notification will occur by December 1.

Admissions Criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on the 4.0 scale used at this university) in all previous undergraduate and graduate work
  • Official scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) taken within five years of application. The general expectation is that applicants will achieve a mean of the three exam scores (Verbal, Quantitative, and Writing) at or above the 50th percentile. Applicants with lower GRE scores may be admitted due to a substantial record of outstanding qualifications.
  • TOEFL score is required for international students. Minimum acceptable scores are
    • 570 paper test,
    • 230 computer-based test, or
    • 71 IBT (not including speaking), or
    • 94 IBT (including speaking)
  • This requirement applies to an applicant from a country where the native language is not English, unless a bachelor's degree or its equivalent or higher was earned in a country where English is the native language. To be competitive, applicants generally should score at least 600 (or equivalent) on the TOEFL.
    • High quality writing and analytic skills (as evidenced in a statement of intent and a sample of academic writing)
    • Demonstrated understanding of and desire to pursue educational research (as evidenced in a statement of intent)
    • Resume or curriculum vita (limit two pages for fellowship consideration)
    • Three letters of recommendation (4 preferred) regarding academic and professional potential
    • Interview may be required by faculty in specific Area of Study

Doctoral Student Financial Support:

There are a number of opportunities for doctoral students to receive financial support, frequently involving a combination of stipend and tuition assistance.

Graduate Associates:

The School of Teaching and Learning offers Graduate Associate positions in the areas of Teaching, Research, and Administration. These are generally awarded to doctoral students. Applications for Graduate Associate positions should be submitted with applications for admission (or soon thereafter). Applications may be found at /edtl/resources/downloads/ga-app.pdf.

Graduate School Fellowships:
