The faculty of the Foreign, Second, and Multilingual Language Education (FSMLE) Area of Study offer courses and research opportunities which revolve around a core interest in the teaching and learning of languages beyond a student's native language as well as the relationships (linguistic, rhetorical, cultural) between the native and additional language(s). We explore foreign and second language teaching and learning from an inclusive perspective which accounts for school systems and educational settings around the world. Two broad domainonecolumns define the orientation of and activity within the program: Foreign Language (languages other than English) and English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESOL).
FSMLE faculty have lived, studied, and taught in many parts of the world. Our students likewise come from around the globe. Our PhD graduates become researchers and teacher educators devoted to investigating issues, problems, and questions concerning foreign and second language learning and pedagogy. Our courses provide cognitive, sociocultural, and critical perspectives on research, practices, and philosophies related to foreign language acquisition and instruction. Through their coursework and research activities, our doctoral students become leaders in merging the worlds of theory, research, and practice as related to foreign/second language learners and teachers.
