The faculty and students in Language, Education, and Society (LES) research how language and social processes are related to educational issues. Faculty and students in LES are concerned with issues of language and learning in school and non-school settings. Among the topics studied are: language variation and diversity in educational settings (including multilingualism and dialect variation), analysis of the language used in classrooms and other educational settings, issues of language, power and social relationships in educational settings, and theories and methods for researching language in educational settings.
Students are encouraged to combine their interest in Language, Education and Society with interests in literacy education; second language learning; early and middle childhood education; adolescent and adult literacies; global and social studies education; multiculturalism and diversity; disability studies; and science and math education, among others.
