Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in
Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education

The Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education (MESE) Area of Study consists of faculty and students who pursue social justice through high quality investigations of dimensions of the cultural politics of education. Inquiry focuses on the social, historical, cultural, and global intersections in teaching, learning, and educational research. Faculty and students in MESE are concerned with these constructs as interrelated, and theoretically mutually reinforcing, a fundamental notion in the study of multiculturalism and social justice. Students and faculty of the MESE have expertise in the following specializations: Critical Multicultural Teacher Education, Epistemologies and Theories in Multicultural and Equity Studies, Curricular Approaches to Multicultural and Equity Studies, Intersections of Power, Place and Resistance in Education. Students are encouraged to combine their interests in Multicultural and Equity Studies with interests in literacy studies, disability studies, children's literature, foreign and second language education, and early childhood and elementary education, among others.
