Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) inInterdisciplinary Middle Childhood Education

Students in this program pursue a B.A. degree with a major in interdisciplinary middle childhood education and a minor in education in the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences. Students in this program choose two areas of concentration, in any combination, among the following subjects: reading and language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. Each of the areas of concentration is designed to provide a foundational understanding of the principles and methodologies of the subject matter relevant to the middle childhood curriculum, as well as an understanding of how each of these subject matters is important to society and everyday life. Several of the courses are taught by using active learning methods, which are found to be most effective in learning. The program also includes a minor in education with field experiences and courses in education, which will provide first-hand experience in 4-9 grade classrooms and provide an opportunity to examine pedagogical methods.

The program is designed to fulfill many of the state and national requirements for certification/licensure for a middle childhood teacher (grades 4-9) and to streamline preparation for application to the M.Ed. certification/licensure program at OSU. The minimum GPA for entry into and graduation from this program is 2.70. Please be aware that the OSU M.Ed. certification/licensure program currently requires a minimum cumulative point-hour ratio (CPHR) of 3.00 for admission, and that the average CPHR of admitted students is usually significantly higher.
