Biographical Information:

I am a professor and researcher interested in how people use written language to construct knowledge and learning opportunities, to construct social relationships and social identity, to create collective memory, to connect people and events across time and space, and to improve their communities and the various "worlds" in which they live. I am interested in the potential of classroom education (preschool through high school) for connecting academic learning and local knowledge and for building communities. I am interested in the teaching and learning of reading and writing in ways that have meaning for students, their families, and their communities, and that integrate academic excellence with social justice.

I am currently involved in two long term, collaborative research projects. The first focuses on young children's spoken and written narrative development. This research project seeks new ways to understand how children might acquire a repertoire of narrative and storytelling practices (both spoken and written) for a broad range of uses and situations. (This project is conducted in collaboration with Professor Laurie Katz of Ohio State and Professor Tempii Champion of Long Island University). The second project focuses on reading comprehension as a set of intertextual practices. (This project is conducted in collaboration with Susan Goldman of the University of Illinois at Chicago). Instead of viewing reading comprehension as the understanding of a single text, reading comprehension is defined as creating meaning by bringing together multiple texts. Much of my research involves ethnographic research, the use of video recordings, discourse analysis, and close collabortion with teachers.

My research and my teaching are grounded in my experiences as a former language arts and reading teacher. I have taught at the upper elementary through high school levels; I also directed a reading clinic. Currently, I am a co-director of the Columbus Area Writing Project.
