Biographical Information:
Peter V. Paul, Ph.D. is a Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning (Integrated Teaching & Learning Section). He also holds an Adjunct Professorship position in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science. One of his major responsibilities is teacher education for individuals interested in the education of deaf or hard of hearing students, especially in general education settings (M.Ed program in Hearing Impairment). He also works with students, who have a vested interest in inclusion as part of their program in Integrated Teaching and Learning (i.e., General Education). Dr. Paul's research interests involve the areas of vocabulary, literacy, and literate thought. Dr. Paul has published extensively on language and literacy development of individuals with severe to profound hearing impairment and has publications addressing inclusion for children with special needs. His scholarly texts include Education and Deafness (1990), Toward a Psychology of Deafness (1993), Literacy and Deafness (1998), and Language and Deafness (2001, 3rd. ed.). Dr. Paul is one of three coordinators of a program offering American Sign Language as a foreign language at Ohio State University. The School of Teaching and Learning (College of Education) is responsible for teaching the upper level ASL courses. Dr. Paul has conducted workshops for educators and parents on an international, national, state, and local level in the areas of literacy, inclusion, and literate thought. He has a bilateral, profound hearing impairment and is the father of a son, Peter Ben, who has Down syndrome and autism (13 years old). Dr. Paul has been very active in the community and field by serving on committees that address issues in deafness and special education. He was co-President of a parent's organization in Westerville, Ohio, for two years, 1994 to 1996.
