For more than 16 years, the Ohio State College of Education has played a  leadership role in assisting the Republic of Indonesia with institutional capacity building of its national system of teacher education. Ohio State has served as the lead institution of universitIndonesian shadow puppet imagey consortia in two major Indonesian/World Bank teacher education projects aimed at the development and improvement of secondary and elementary teacher education curricula, programs, and research. The projects have entailed exchanges of significant numbers of faculty.

Ohio State has designed customized short-term professional development programs and customized mater’s degree programs for Indonesian teacher educators that have been implemented at seven universities on three continents. Working closely with the Ministry of National Education, Directorate General for Higher Education, Ohio State has always tailored the programs to meet the specific needs of Indonesia’s developing national system of teacher education and the collective and individual needs of program participants.

OIDRS recently concluded a one-year project with funding from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  This project, Reforming Indonesian Teaching Practice, further supported partnerships with three Indonesian universities.  The project focused on adapting and implementing in Indonesia the democratic classroom practices of constructivist teaching and learning, classroom action research, and clinical supervision of student teachers.

The Reforming Indonesian Teaching Practice Project built upon several previous contracts funded by the Republic of Indonesia and the World Bank.  Details concerning these projects can be found in the following project sheets.

The West/Central Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics
With funding from the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio Resource Center for Mathematics, Science and Reading, the School of Teaching & Learning is leading a three university collaborative program to address the shortage of math and science teachers in Ohio.  The West/Central Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics (EXCEL Center), directed by Co-Principal Investigators Michael Beeth, Associate Professor, and Douglas Owens, Professor, will expand existing science and mathematics education programs in Central and Western Ohio.

The Center will recruit, prepare and retain non-traditional students to become science and mathematics teachers for grades 7-12.  Students will be employed part-time in an urban school district as they use Ohio's new alternative educator license to enter the classroom.  The EXCEL Center also plans to invite arts and sciences faculty at Central and Western Ohio community colleges, colleges, and universities to join education faculty in teacher preparation programs and in sessions to improve current math and science teachers' classroom skills.

For additional information please contact either Dr. Michael Beeth or Dr. Doug Owens.
