Technology

M.A. Program

The Technologies of Instruction and Media MA program offers students a flexible curriculum that prepares them for a variety of professions related to using technologies to teach. Recent graduates of the program have gone on to careers as:

  • Technology Integration Specialists in Schools and Districts
  • Instructional Designers in Higher Education and Business
  • Teachers who effectively and thoughtfully integrate technology into their teaching
  • Leadership and support staff in university and college educational technology units and departments

Credits necessary for graduation:

There are three graduation options for MA students: 1) a four hour sit down exam, 2) an action research project. and 3) a thesis. Students selecting options 1 and 2 are required to complete 50 credits to graduate, while students who complete a thesis must complete 45 credits.

Option 1 - Final exam Option

The final exam option is comprehensive, closed book test that covers the general areas in the student's coursework.

Option 2 - Action Research Option

The action research project is a significant work that blends theory and practice. The action research project might include the creation of some type of educational media (e.g., web site, video) or the study of a particular learning environment (e.g., technology integrated into a physical classroom, district technology curriculum, online course). All action research projects include a written paper that situates the project within specific literatures and social/cultural/pedagogical contexts. Each project is negotiated individually with the student's advisor.

Guidelines for the Action Research Project can be found here.

Option 3 - Thesis Option

For the thesis option students conduct original research into a particular question around educational technology. Students selecting this option are expected to include more research courses in their program compared to those you select the exam or project option.
