Dr. E. Gordon Gee

Gee

President, The Ohio State University

E. Gordon Gee is among the most highly experienced and respected university presidents in the nation. He returned to lead The Ohio State University after having served as Chancellor of Vanderbilt University for seven years. Prior to his tenure at Vanderbilt, he was president of Brown University, The Ohio State University, the University of Colorado, and West Virginia University.

Dr. Gee will share with the Academy how the relationship between higher education and public schools are changing. Dr. Gee will discuss economic, political, and global factors that will accelerate a "rethinking" of how our P-16 institutions will accomplish their respective missions.

Dr. Gee is the author of numerous articles and books related to law and education. His law degree is from Columbia University and his undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Utah. He is active in a number of professional and service organizations, and has received numerous honorary degrees, awards, and recognitions.


Dr. Douglas Reeves

Dr. Reeves will discuss a new leadership framework for school administrators that is presented in his soon to be released work, Renewal Coaching: Sustainable Change for Individuals and Organizations. Dr. Reeves will outline strategies by which Superintendents create organizational "meaning" and the "freedom" to sustain a journey of achievement. Dr. Reeves will also examine the process of change through a series of lenses: finding patterns of toxicity and renewal, confronting change killers, coaching in harmony, coaching through pain, nurturing personal elements of coaching, coaching with emotional intelligence, creating energy, meaning, and freedom to sustain the journey. His interactive process will provide skills and insights applicable to the daily administrative world of Superintendents.


Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum

President of Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia

Dr. Tatum's research and teaching is in the field of psychology. Her work in providing insight into how schools can improve the quality of teaching to minorities and develop a rigorous culture of academic expectations has received national recognition. Her best selling work, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?, has been widely recognized for its insights and wisdom to the national dialog of school improvement. Dr. Tatum will also discuss her work as the President of one of our leading liberal arts colleges. Since assuming the office she has lead the college into becoming an elite high performing institution that has been recognized by US & News and World Report.


Dr. Richard C. Wallace, Jr.

Superintendent Emeritus, Pittsburgh Public Schools

Dr. Wallace served as a Clinical Professor of Educational Administration at the University of Pittsburgh from 1993-2006. Currently, he serves as Project Director for the Educational Leadership Initiative (ELI) at the University of Pittsburgh. This program provides leadership coaching for superintendents, principals, and teacher leaders in 20 suburban, rural and urban districts in Western Pennsylvania.

His books From Vision to Practice: The Art of Educational Leadership (1996) and The Learning School: A Guide to Vision Based Leadership (1997) stress the educational and instructional leadership responsibilities of superintendents and principals. Dr. Wallace will share his perceptions of essential leadership skills for superintendents and follow-up on several elements of Dr. Reeves' presentation. He will also speak to the issues surrounding the changing skill sets of the superintendency as well as fundamental skills that when ignored lead to difficulties.


Dr. Beverly L. Hall

Superintendent, Atlanta Public Schools
AASA 2009 Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Hall has served as superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, serving 50,000 students, for 10 years, one of the longest tenures at of an urban school district. Under her leadership, standardized test scores have risen, aging facilities have been renovated, and a new blueprint for business operations is being implemented. The district's vision is that APS will be one of the nation's highest performing urban school systems, where 90 percent of its ninth-graders graduate from high school in four years ready for success in college or career.

Dr. Hall's previous posts include state district superintendent of Newark, N.J., Public Schools and deputy chancellor for instruction of the New York City Public Schools.


Deborah Delisle

Delisle

Superintendent of Public Instruction, State of Ohio

Dr. Delisle is newly appointed to her position and will outline from her perspective the changes and strengths that will face school districts and superintendents in a climate of economic challenge.

Given the new administration in Washington, as well as the current economic climate she will outline her perspective from her vantage point of having served as a highly successful K-12 superintendent and as the chief operating officer of Ohio's 614 school districts.


Dr. Stuart Berger

President, BWP and Associates: Executive Search Firm & Consultants, Towson, Maryland

Dr. Berger is President of BWP and Associates, a nationally recognized search and consulting firm. Dr. Berger will discuss key elements and strategies of executive employment contract negotiations. Based on his current work across the country with numerous school boards, he will also share his thoughts on essential skill sets that lead to successful board-superintendent relations. Dr. Berger earned his Ph.D. and J.D. degrees with honors from the University of Maryland.


Dr. Anthony Rucci

Professor, Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University

Dr. Rucci is a former CEO of Fortune 500 company and focuses his research in the area of organizational planning and accountability. He will be discussing some of the key elements of Collins' work Good to Great in the Social Sector. His emphasis will be organizational planning and strategic management.

Dr. Rucci has worked with numerous school districts and nonprofit organizations and helps provide consulting for boards of education and chief administrators.


Dr. Raymond Calabrese

Professor of Educational Administration, The Ohio State University School of Educational Policy and Leadership

Dr. Calabrese has a rich background across K-12 and higher education. His research focuses on the application of appreciative inquiry in multiple school contexts. He collaborates with school leaders to create sustainable partnerships to improve educational outcomes. He is the author or co-author of seven books dedicated to improving the practice of educational leaders and has published over one hundred refereed journal articles. Dr. Calabrese will share the power of appreciative inquiry to transform school organizations and create a culture of hope in the most trying of contexts. His presentation is based on his field research using appreciative inquiry in rural, suburban, and urban school districts.


BASA/ODE Presentation on Superintendent Standards

There will be a discussion of the newly adopted state board of education's standards for superintendents. The standards are the result of a two year process of research and committee work by a team of practicing administrators, board members and university professors. The work provides superintendents with a template of indicators and standards from which they can engage their boards in a formative assessment process. The work also provides content suggestions on revising the superintendent's position description to accurately represent the scope of responsibility.
