Graduate Studies Committee

Graduate education at Ohio State is highly decentralized. This is because graduate study by its very nature is discipline-specific. As a result, the local Graduate Studies Committee and its Chair have great authority and responsibility for administering local degree programs.

The Graduate Studies Committee is responsible for administering the local graduate program within the rules of the Graduate Faculty. The basic reference for Graduate Studies Committee Chairs, the Graduate School Handbook, contains all of the general policies and rules related to graduate study that have been legislated by the Graduate Council.

Some of the published responsibilities of the Graduate Studies Committee include:

  • Publishing a local graduate program handbook with the School of Educational Policy and Leadership's (EPL) policies and rules
  • Reviewing student petitions for exceptions to published rules
  • Setting degree requirements that are in addition to University requirements
  • Reviewing new course requests
  • Reviewing requests to transfer graduate credit
  • Setting admissions requirements beyond the University requirements
  • Establishing and enforcing the School's admissions procedures

The Graduate School Handbook spells out the responsibilities that are shared by the Graduate Studies Committee of individual programs and by the Graduate School. For a more complete explanation of the responsibilities of the Graduate School and the Graduate Studies Committee, please read Section V. of the Graduate School Handbook.

The Committee takes seriously its responsibility to insure the quality of EPL's programs. Five of EPL's graduate faculty, one alternate faculty member and one student (non-voting privileges), comprise the Committee. In 2008-2009, the committee includes:

  • Dr. Scott Sweetland, Chair - Educational Administration
  • Dr. Lynley Anderman - Educational Psychology and Philosophy
  • Dr. Tatiana Suspitsyna - Higher Education and Student Affairs
  • Dr. Antoinette Errante - Cultural Foundations, Technology and Qualitative Inquiry
  • Dr. Dorinda Gallant - Quantitative Research, Evaluation and Measurement in Education
  • Dr. Leonard Baird, alternate - Higher Education and Student Affairs

If you have any questions about how the Committee operates or whether a concern or question you have should be addressed by the Committee, please contact Deb Zabloudil, Director of Students Services, in Ramseyer 122 or by email at dzabloudil@ehe.osu.edu. Deb serves as secretary to the Graduate Studies Committee.
