Transfer Credit

If you have taken graduate course work at another university, it is possible to transfer that credit to Ohio State and have it count toward a graduate degree. We have a two-part process in place.

  1. Whenever you want to transferred credit to Ohio State, you must first get your advisor's permission. You and your advisor should fill out and sign the EPL Request to Transfer Graduate Credit form (pdf).
  2. If you are requesting that the transfered course be considered equivalent to an OSU course, you MUST have the signature of the professor who regularly teaches the course.
  3. At the same time, please fill out Section 1 of the Graduate School Request to Transfer Credit form (pdf).
  4. Turn both forms in to the Student Services Office in 122 Ramseyer Hall.
  5. The Student Services Office will process the request for transfer of graduate credit. As long as your advisor has agreed to the transfer of credit and as long as your request meets Graduate School guidelines for the transfer of credit (Section II.3.2.3 of the Graduate School Handbook) the Graduate Studies Committee chair will sign the Graduate School form and forward it to the Graduate School Here is a copy of the Graduate School Policy:
    • II.3.2.3 Transfer Credit. Graduate credit earned at another university may be transferred to this university. The Graduate School places no limit on the graduate credit hours that may be transferred. However, residence requirements determine the number of graduate credit hours that may be counted toward a graduate degree at this university (ref. II.5.6, II.6.7.4).

The following conditions must be satisfied in order to transfer graduate credit:

  1. that the graduate credit was earned as a graduate student at an accredited university
  2. that the student earned at least a grade of "B" or satisfactory in each course for which credit is to be transferred
  3. that the Graduate Studies Committee approves the transfer

Credits should be transferred at the time the student is admitted but no later than the end of the second quarter of enrollment in the Graduate School. Transfer credits count in the student's total earned hours but do not count in the student's graduate cumulative point-hour ratio. The credit hours and the mark "K" appear on the student's official permanent record.

For any transfer credit to count toward a master's degree, the courses transferred must have been taken within the time limit established by the Graduate Studies Committee (ref. II.5.6).

For transferred graduate credit to count toward the 90 post-master's graduate credit hours required for the doctoral degree, it must be in excess of the master's degree requirements in a field in which the doctoral degree is awarded at the other university. It must be coursework normally taken by doctoral students at the other institution.

On receipt and evaluation of a transcript listing courses completed, the Graduate Studies Committee Chairperson initiates the request for transfer of graduate credit.
