Sharon Seiling

Scholarly Interests

Financial, physical, and emotional well-being of rural low-income families in the post-welfare reform era. Specific research topics include food security, employment patterns and benefits, self-sufficiency standard income gap, family coping strategies, health, and the role of community context in family sustainability.
Dr. Seiling currently serves as the chair of the NC223 research team from land-grant universities in 15 states, who are collecting primary qualitative and quantitative data from over 430 families over three years. The data are providing a picture of rural families in varying settings who are working, receiving and providing family support, and accessing government services in a changing economic climate.
