Dr. Cunningham's scholarly interests are in the history of clothing and textiles and dress as a phenomenon in popular culture. A book-length study of popular culture Reforming Women's Fashion: Dress Reform-Politics, Health, and Art, 1850-1920 (2003) Kent State University Press, examines nineteenth and twentieth-century women's clothing reform. A book of readings, Fashioning America (with Linda Welters) will appear in 2004 (Berg). The book provides a cultural history of fashion in North America with a focus on the twentieth century.
Articles that appear in Dress range from costume in eighteenth-century paintings to swimwear in the 1930's. These studies draw on relationships of dress to contemporary theories and traditions in art, technological innovations, or societal customs.
Broad research interests include the following:
History of Costume: 18th, 19th and 20th Century,
History of American Textiles
Women's Dress Reform
North American Women's Material Culture
A current project in addition to those listed under Publications includes a study of the knitting industry in Piqua, Ohio (with Jim Oda, Piqua Library Archivist).
