Research

Premature Termination in Marriage and Family Therapy: client and therapist factors.
I am currently collecting data at OSU’s Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic to investigate client, therapist and relationship factors involved in predicting premature termination in marriage and family therapy. Although, premature termination has been well studied in individual psychotherapies, very little is known about premature termination in marriage and family therapy. How does therapeutic alliance impact premature termination when one client and the therapist feel allied while the other client does not?
I will also be exploring whether or not change in well being within the first six sessions of therapy is related to the initial level of differentiation of the client(s), and investigating progress on the presenting problem in marriage and family therapy from both the clients and therapists’ perspectives and its relationship to therapeutic alliance from the clients and therapists’ perspective.

The role of differentiation of self in the decision making process for breast cancer screening.
I am submitting a grant proposal to study the role that differentiation plays in women’s decision making about breast cancer screening. I am hoping that this is a stepping off point to study other medical issues and how differentiation of self impacts the processing of threatening health information.
