My primary program of research centers on investigating the role of HIV disclosure to family and friends in reducing sexual risk related behaviors in men and mental health outcomes in women. To this end I have conducted 4 major studies. The first is an investigation of 139 HIV-positive men who have sex with men (R29MH56292). The aims of this study are to (a) repeatedly measure disclosure, disclosure needs, and sexual risk-taking behaviors of HIV-positive gay men, (b) investigate over time the relationship between these variables and (c) test a preliminary theoretical model of the relationship between disclosure, disclosure needs, and sexual risk-taking behaviors.
The second is an investigation of 100 HIV-positive women (R01MH62293). The aims of this study are to (a) measure disclosure, indices of mental health, and social support at defined intervals post diagnosis, (b) test and refine a recently developed theoretical model that will accurately predict the relationship between disclosure, social support, and mental health and (c) identify aspects of the relationship between family, friend, and partners and HIV-positive women which would contribute to supportive post disclosure reactions.
The third is an intervention development project (R21MH067494). The aims of this project are to (a) conduct formative research regarding the considerations given for disclosure and non-disclosure that will help inform the development and implementation of a disclosure-related prevention intervention, (b) develop a manualized disclosure intervention and (c) pilot test the intervention and associated outcome measures.
Finally, I am currently funded (R34MH074363) to develop an intervenetion to assist MSM disclose their serostatus to family members.
