NCTE meeting has full agenda for T&L faculty

Rudine Sims Bishop, emeritus professor of Teaching and Learning, recently received the 2007 Outstanding Educator of the English Language Arts Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. She is a pioneer in researching children's literature written about minorities, and is credited with helping increase the number of published children's book authors of color.

During the meeting in New York, the college honored her and six other Teaching and Learning faculty who provide leadership to NCTE in English language arts. They are: Evelyn Freeman, dean of OSU-Mansfield, recipient of the 2006 NCTE Distinguished Service Award; Mollie Blackburn and Caroline Clark, co-chairs of the Assembly for Research; Patricia Enciso, chair of the Research Foundation; Laurie Katz, chair of the Commission on Language; and Barbara Lehman, member of the Elementary Section steering committee.

Teachers' College Press book-signing sessions showcased new releases by Barbara Lehman, Children's Literature and Learning: Literary Study Across the Curriculum; and Adrian Rodgers and Emily Rodgers, The Effective Literacy Coach: Using Observations and Conversations to Support Literacy Coaching. In addition, 1997 Ph.D. alumnus Lawrence R. Sipe, now associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, signed his new book, Storytime: Young Children's Literary Understanding in the Classroom.

Consumer Sciences Career Fair impresses employers

More than 341 students met with 35 potential employers at the annual Consumer Sciences Career Fair recently.

"The students came prepared with business dress, resumes and their introductions ready," said Nancy Dugan, career counselor for the Department of Consumer Sciences. There were about 100 candidates from Textiles and Clothing, another 100 from Family Resource Management and almost 70 from Hospitality Management. In addition, 70-some students from other majors attended.

Recruiters came from Abercrombie, Accel, Ameriprise, Concord Hospitality, Crate & Barrel, Crowne Plaza Downtown, Drury Hotels, DSW, Express, Fed Ex Ground, First Investors Corp, Goody's Family Clothing, Graeter's Ice Cream, Hyatt, JC Penney, Kohl's, Lane Bryant, Limitedbrands, Macy's, Marriott, Max & Erma's, Metlife Resources, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Primerica Financial, Steak & Shake, Summit Financial, Target, TGIFridays, The Wasserstrom Company, Tween Brands, Urban Outfitters, Von Maur, Wells Fargo Financial, and Western Southern Financial Group.

Research, Publications, Presentations, Service

Adrienne Dixson, Teaching and Learning, has published "Tyranny of the Majority: Re-enfranchisement of African American Teacher Educators Teaching for Democracy" in the November 2007 International Studies in Qualitative Research Journal with co-author Jeannine E. Dingus. Also, they co-authored "In Search of Our Mother's Gardens: Black Women Teachers and Professional Socialization" for the Spring 2008 Teachers College Record, which is already available online.

James L. Moore III, Physical Activity and Educational Services, was recently invited to present " Young, Gifted, Black, and Male: An examination of School, Social, Psychological, and Cultural Factors" at Up Where We Belong: Accelerating African-American Male Student Achievement Conference in Atlanta. The meeting was sponsored by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), CollegeBoard and National Association for Gifted Children.

Jill Nolan, Family and Consumer Sciences, OSU Extension, and EHE Outreach and Engagement, presented "Global Issues on Aging in Place" at the Asia/Oceania Regional Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Beijing, China; and "Senior Cooperative Housing . . . an Emerging Housing Option for Older Adults in Rural Communities" at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco.

Thomas O'Brien, Teaching and Learning, Mansfield, has co-edited a new book, Bridging Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (Rotterdam, The Netherlands: Sense Publishers). The co-editor is Mordechai Gordon, Quinniapaic University. He also has published "Perils of accommodation: The case of Joseph W. Holley" in the American Educational Research Journal, 44(4), 806-52; and "What happened to the promise of Brown? An organizational explanation and an outline for change" in Teachers College Record, 109(8), 1875-1901. It is available online.

Adrian Rodgers and Emily Rodgers, Teaching and Learning, co-authored "Preparing for diversity: Professional development for today's educators" in Literacy for Diverse Learners, edited by B. Honchell and M. Schulz.

Adrian Rodgers, Teaching and Learning, and Virginia Keil, University of Toledo, co-authored "Restructuring a traditional student teaching supervision model: Fostering enhanced professional development and mentoring within a professional development school context" in Teaching and Teacher Education, Vol. 23, No.1.

Tasha Snyder, Human Development and Family Science, presented "Patterns of Union Formation and Dissolution in Rural and Urban Areas: A Comparison Across Recent Cohorts of American Women" for the Initiative in Population Research and Center for Human Resource, Columbus.

Rick Voithofer, Educational Policy and Leadership, was the keynote speaker at "Tech Mix," the annual Ohio CDC Association State Conference, Columbus. Ohio CDC Association is a statewide group of Community Development Corporations. He presented "Culturally Relevant Community Technology: Building Bridges Across the Digital Divides."

In the News

Business Week recently reported on research conducted by Kay Stafford, Consumer Sciences. In her recent study of family businesses, she found that women and men have vastly different management styles.

Mark Failla, Human Nutrition, told the Austin American-Statesman, "Goji berry rising as new star in health-food industry," that marketers may say the berry is an anti-aging miracle food, but he and other researchers are still determining its value. The paper notes that Failla's early research on the berry's high levels of zeaxanthin may indicate a role in preventing macular degeneration.
