Scholarship Opportunities

College of Education and Human Ecology Scholarships

The College of Education and Human Ecology has numerous scholarships available once you are enrolled at Ohio State. Scholarship applications are due March 5 of every academic year for the following year. You are able to fill out the application online, but ensure that you also submit the supporting documentation by the deadline listed on the application instructions.

Scholarships created specifically for students in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCS ED) major are awarded through the College of Education and Human Ecology application process. Be sure to apply for College of Education and Human Ecology scholarships every year.

Ohio Professional Association Scholarships

Some professional associations award scholarships to students once they are registered and enrolled in a college of Human Ecology.

The Ohio Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is one of the professional associations that make scholarships available. To be eligible, you must be a member of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, which has annual dues of $60 for students. Once you are a member, be sure to fill out an OAFCS scholarship application (pdf).

Finding an FCS Teaching Job

Finding a teaching position after completing the FCS ED program and earning the Two-Year Provisional license # 090120 is assisted by several internet websites, faculty in FCS ED, the College of Education and Human Ecology, and your network connections through field experiences and professional association annual meetings.

FCS ED faculty will alert you by e-mail about job listings they personally are aware of. The faculty person who supervises you winter and spring quarter during your internship will write a letter of recommendation. Your internship FCS teacher will also write a letter of recommendation.

Search for job postings such as the ones on the AAFCS website.

Education and Human Ecology Career Services has a website that assists in resume writing, searching for teaching positions, and searching for teaching fairs like Teach Ohio. You need to complete an application to participate in the services available on the EHE Careers website.

REAP is a website where you can post your application for school personnel administrators to see and view job postings listed by schools. Each school district will have a website application process you also need to complete. Visit the website for more information.

You will also build a network of FCS teachers through field experiences and attending professional meetings. The group of teachers you know through your own connections will be helpful in your job search.

Ohio Teacher Salary Ranges will give you an idea of how much you will make, depending on the school district in Ohio.

Your Teaching Portfolio

Each student preparing to be a W&FL teacher prepares a teaching portfolio beginning in FCS ED 289 Early Field Experience. This includes a resume and assignments prepared while in early field experience. The program faculty will provide the initial supplies to begin the portfolio development. Beginning the process early and working on it regularly assures it will represent your best quality work.

We recommend you prepare both a hard copy and an electronic portfolio using the four domains of what teachers need to know and be able to do. The domains have been developed by Charlotte Danielson and are used in the Pathwise mentoring of first year teachers in their preparation for the PRAXIS III performance exam. These domains drive the FCS ED program and course work.

Using your Portfolio During and After a Interview

Students have discovered over time how to use a teaching portfolio during an interview. Take the hard copy with you to the interview. When you arrive and sit down, open it up to the cover page or to a page you think is your best work. As the interviewers ask questions turn to pages of the portfolio that show how you have thought about and performed the concept related to their question. Teachers who do not use this procedure will complain that no one ever looked at their portfolio. You are in control of whether the portfolio is looked at. Also have in your portfolio a hard copy of your resume and a CD of your electronic portfolio to leave with the interviewers. Some teachers also have a hard copy of one or two entries from their portfolio that represents their best work, spiral bound with a cover page and a resume. At this time we are not recommending publishing your portfolio on a website. This is your work and you do not want it copied and used by others without your knowledge.

Professional Association Links

The following are web site links to all the FCS ED related professional associations. Be sure to join them as a students to begin your connection to the profession. Reduced student membership fees are available for many of them.

Resources for Students and FCS Teachers

Sample FCS Inquiry Units

The new Ohio FCS standards are combined to create new courses. This website presents one new course, "Relationships, Talents, and Skills". This course is designed to help students successfully transition from middle school to high school and from high school to postsecondary education.

The teaching method used to design this course is inquiry units. The goal in using the inquiry method is to help students become more self-regulated, motivated, life-long learners with high levels of achievement, preparing them for postsecondary education and their future in families and the workplace. The units are designed to be of interest and to engage students in authentic, real-world projects. This is a method advocated by the Ohio Resource Center, and supported by Ohio Department of Education, Division of Career, Technical, and Adult Education - the sponsors of this curriculum project. The project was directed by Ruth E. Dohner, The Ohio State University. Family and Consumer Sciences teachers participated in constructing the units' organization and inquiries.

Lesson Plan Samples from Kelly Schulze that Use the Teaching Model Phases

Kelly Schulze B.S., M.Ed, is a Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Whitehall Yearling High School in Whitehall, Ohio. She began her teaching career after completing her Bachelors of Science degree with a major of Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management in 1997 and a Masters of Education degree from The Ohio State University in 2001. She has dedicated her life to helping teach others how to take care of themselves - physically, emotionally, and socially. She was drawn to the Family and Consumer Science program at The Ohio State University because of its emphasis in teaching the youth of today how to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. These are skills that today she weaves into every lesson in her classroom. As the Chairperson of the Intervention Assistance Team she uses many problem solving skills and the REASON approach to help students and parents develop creative solutions to often confusing situations.

Kelly is also a wife of seven years to an Elementary School teacher who supports her and her efforts in the classroom each day. She is also a mother of an active toddler. Kelly enjoys music, exercising, gardening, and cooking. Her time in the kitchen is slowly being shared with her toddler as he begins to enjoy the art of cooking and spending time surrounded by family and music.
