Unit Description

This unit is intended to help students transition from middle school to high school, guided by a high-school and postsecondary school plan for success in a career field. The change of academic expectations from middle school to high school requires major adjustments that many students may not understand. In career field groups, students will create games that will help students in the whole class learn about the career field. All class members must learn about all career fields -- not just the one for which they created the game. A reflection on the game-playing experience links what students learned to their own individual results on their career assessment. After playing all of the games, students will design their own Program of Study (through postsecondary) for a career field matching their skills and talents.

Essential Questions:

  • What does it take to be successful in school and in postsecondary education?

Critical/Driving Questions:

  • What are the 16 career field possibilities?
  • What is a career plan?
  • What assumptions do we make when we create career plans?
  • What values emerge as career planning proceeds?
  • What is academic success?
  • What roles do interpersonal and intrapersonal skills play as you transition through high school?
