Unit Description

Conflict is a part of everyday life. As such, it is essential that students develop skills to positively express emotions and resolve differences/conflicts. In this unit, students will explore individual conflict resolution strategies and the consequences for different strategies. Students will evaluate conflict as it is portrayed in current events and creative media. Students will create a newspaper or magazine with a primary focus on conflict resolution strategies.

Essential Questions:

  • How do conflict and conflict resolution affect our lives?

Critical/Driving Questions:

  • What are some causes of conflict in the family? At school? At work?
  • Which conflict resolution strategies are used at school? Portrayed on TV or in films?
  • What are some effective methods of handling conflict?
  • How do cultural differences create conflict?
  • What are some consequences of resolving conflict effectively?
  • Violence! Why is it the answer for some?
  • How does conflict affect society?
  • How can we show tolerance and still disagree?
  • How do unshared assumptions drive conflict?
