Unit Description

This unit requires students to learn about what makes an effective learner as they transition from middle school to high school. Students find transitioning from middle school to high school challenging as they encounter a new set of standards and learning expectations. Learning and performing as a learner are now required to be successful. In order to support families of the future, all students will need to be academically successful so that they can proceed to post-secondary education and a career. This unit will have students working in groups to learn about academic success and develop a freshman manual that will be used to help new freshmen entering the school. Students will complete a reflection and problem-solving task to set goals for their success as they complete high school and enter postsecondary education.

Essential Questions:

  • Since only smart kids are successful, how do I get smart?
  • How does academic success connect to career and life success?

Critical/Driving Questions:

  • What does it take to be academically successful?
  • What do personal skills have to do with academic success?
  • How can thoughts, feelings, and actions defeat or inspire academic success?
  • What are consequences of an academic record?
  • How are new academic and life-success behaviors developed (e.g., goal setting, planning)?
  • How can I like school enough to keep my focus and work hard?
