Unit Description

There is a huge leap in expectations from middle school to high school -- both academically and personally. This inquiry is intended to help students think through the changes in thinking and behavior they'll need to make in order to be successful in high school. The inquiry encourages students to explore the many aspects of success and interact with high school students to get and keep an academic success perspective. As successful adults in the future (and to support a family), they will need to take additional postsecondary education. Keep the focus on the need for postsecondary education, so that all students work toward academic achievement. Students will read and study about what makes people academically successful, and write and produce an infomercial with the assistance of high-school-student mentors.

Essential Questions

  • What does it take to be academically and personally successful in high school?

Critical/Driving Questions

  • How does school work?
  • What would be a successful day at school?
  • Do teens need formalized education to be successful in life?
  • Why are grades important?
  • Why do I need to be here?
  • Who cares about my success at school?
