The Battelle Endowment Project

George Newell and David Bloome, two co-directors of the CAWP, have received a Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs grant to study "Composing in a New Key: How Multimodality Shapes Teaching and Learning." The project involves teachers, students, and university collaborators in examining the uses of multimodal composing activities and projects in three schools. The research team, including Jason Gonzales, Gail Garee and Rebekah Reeves, will develop ways of integrating the act of composing visually and with sound into ongoing classroom activities. In addition, they will examine the specific thinking, reasoning, and imagining students engage in while completing multimodal assignments in the context of specific classrooms. Their dual goals for this work are:

  1. to examine teaching practices, student learning, and supporting materials and
  2. to develop model lessons to which other teachers can turn for help in the process of modifying their approaches to multimodal composition.
