2008 Invitational Summer Institute

What is the Summer Institute?

The CAWP Summer Institute is designed for teachers from all disciplines and all levels of instruction, including kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, community college, and university. The CAWP Summer Institute is based on the philosophy of "teachers teaching teachers" and on the importance of teachers themselves writing as a part of improving the teaching of writing. Participating teachers will have the opportunities to learn from each other, to study writing theory and research, to write their own compositions and participate in writing workshops, and to develop leadership and professional development skills in the teaching of writing.

Who Should Apply?

Any teacher who believes that writing is important for students and is willing to work intensively with others is invited to apply. You do not have to be an outstanding writer and you do not have to be an expert in the teaching of writing. However, you must have a commitment to the teaching of writing and students use of writing to help their learning. We encourage applications from teachers of all levels and from all subject areas. We ask that participants in the Summer Institute also commit to working with CAWP during the following year by attending occasional meetings, helping asses students writing from their own classrooms, and providing leadership both to the CAWP and to their school and school district with regard to the teaching of writing. Please see the Description and Application tool bars on the left for dates and online application.

2008 Invitational Summer Institute

What is the Summer Institute?

The Invitational Summer Institute is an intensive professional development program for the teaching of writing. In 2008, the Summer Institute will begin with a 3 day/2 night retreat from June 11 through June 13 and then continue June 16 through 19, June 23 through 26, June 30 through July 2, and July 7 through 10, from 8:30am until 3:30pm each day.

Do I have to attend the retreat?

Yes. The retreat will be held a retreat center approximately 1 hour from Columbus. Each fellow will have their own room and meals will be provided. The retreat is a way for us to jump start the program, to build community with the new fellows and to provide time for writing and reflection. All expenses for the retreat (room and food) will be paid by the CAWP.

How do I get into the Invitational Summer Institute?

We are looking for teachers who are open to new ideas and approaches to teaching, are passionate about writing, and who desire to participate in a collaborative learning environment. If you are accepted into the Summer Institute, you will be expected to attend a pre-institute meeting in May and to participate in follow-up meetings during the academic year. We encourage applications from teachers at all levels and from all subject areas. Acceptance in the Summer Institute is highly selective. There are a limited number of teachers who can be accepted into the CAWP Summer Institute. We have a limited number of spaces available. You begin by sending in an application form. Application forms are available on-line from the CAWP web site or by mail from the Columbus-Area Writing Project, c/o Melissa Wilson, The College of Education & Human Ecology, 353 Arps Hall, 1945 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43210. The co-directors will review all applications and invite a select group to interview. Based on the interview, the application form, and letters of recommendation, the co-directors select the participants for the Summer Institute. We will then inform the applicants if they have been accepted into the Summer Institute.

2008 Invitational Advanced Summer Institute on Multimodal Composition

What is the Advanced Institute on Multimodal Composition?

In the near future, schools will require teaching and learning multiple uses of technological and information sources to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge in multiple genres (stories, reports, etc.) and modalities (print, visual, auditory, color, etc.). In the meantime, as teachers, we might ask ourselves: How can we acquire the skill and knowledge for supporting students in developing such ways of composing and knowing? A primary reason for this multimodal composition workshop is to offer teachers an experience in learning to "compose" using digital video and to offer teachers an opportunity to learn from one another in a supportive professional community.

Who should apply?

This workshop is offered for teachers who have completed the Summer Institute as well as teachers who are considering becoming members of CAWP. Any teacher who believes that composing regardless of the modality is important for students and who is willing to work intensively with others is invited to apply. You do not have to be an outstanding computer expert and you do not have to be an expert in the teaching of technology. However, you must have a commitment to teaching all students to use technology to learn, to create, and to imagine. We encourage applications from teachers of all levels and from all subject areas.
