Teen Relationship Study
Exploring the romantic relationships of adolescent couples
Overview
Little is known about the impact of romantic attachment in the relationships of adolescents. The purpose of this study is to investigate a possible link between romantic attachment and risk behavior among adolescent romantic couples. Adolescents between the ages of 15-18 who are currently in romantic relationships are invited to participate in a research study through OSU.
Date of the Project
January 2011 – Present
What will I need to do if I am in this study?
Adolescents who are interested in participating will be screened for eligibility. If you are eligible, your romantic partner will be contacted and screened for eligibility and interest. If both members of the couple are interested and meet the criteria for participation, a meeting date will be set to complete a short assessment interview. You may choose the location of the meeting. Parental permission is required for all participants who are under the age of 18.
During the 1 hour interview, both you and your partner will complete a series of surveys and questionnaires. After the paper and pencil surveys are complete, you will be asked to participate in a brief videotaped interaction task with your partner. You and your partner will be videotaped for 10 minutes discussing one part of your relationship that you would like to change.
Participation is completely voluntary, you may refuse to answer any question or stop the interview at any time without penalty. All information you provide is confidential meaning no information will be shared with parents, teachers, friends, police, etc.
Will I be given anything for being in this study?
You will be offered $20 after completing all surveys and the videotaped interaction task. If you begin, but do not finish all surveys and/or the videotaped interaction task, you will be offered $10.
About the researcher
Hello!
I am currently a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at The Ohio State University. The data collected from this project will be the basis of my dissertation which is focused on the romantic relationships of adolescents. I believe these relationships are influential in the success of later relationships in adulthood. In addition to the study of early relationships, I am also interested in adolescent risk behavior.
I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this research project with anyone who is interested. Please feel free to call or email me at any time with questions, or to talk about your potential involvement in the study.
