For Prospective Students
Involvement Potential
As a research assistant, many opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities related to ongoing projects are available. Dr. Slesnick has two current and two pending research projects, and students are actively involved in various activities including recruiting of research participants, conducting therapy, collecting and analyzing data, writing papers, presenting at conferences, and many other activities.
Journal Club Meeting
Each week, a student chooses a research or theoretical paper which the group reads and discusses. Students design research projects and discuss thesis and dissertation ideas. Drafts of papers (or conference submissions) are submitted to the group and are discussed fully with feedback provided by the group to improve the manuscript. The goal is to facilitate the development of scientific writing culminating in the submission of peer-reviewed papers. Research design, underlying theoretical frameworks, feasibility, and contribution to the extant knowledge base are all integrated into the discussions. Overall, students are engaged in a dynamic learning process in which the goal is to become excited about research and the many creative possibilities associated with it.
Training in Grant Writing
All students are immersed in the grant writing process. Students are mentored to prepare independent grant applications.
Hands on Experience Working on a Clinical Trial
All of Dr. Slesnick's projects are randomized clinical trials. Students have the opportunity to join the projects as a therapist and learn the process of conducting research to evaluate and improve interventions that ameliorate individual and family suffering.
