The Ph.D. Program in Couple and Family Therapy

The Ph.D. program in Couple and Family Therapy is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), American Association for Marital and Family Therapy.

The PhD CFT Program offers a doctoral curriculum designed to meet the standards for AAMFT clinical membership, and to prepare clinical scholars and researchers. Some of the required courses are listed below:

Clinical Training and Facilities

Students are involved in clinical work from the beginning of their program. Initial client contact hours will vary depending on experience. The program operates The OSU Couple and Family Therapy Clinic which is equipped with state of the art video equipment and one-way mirrors for live observation of student work. During this initial experience, students are supervised by the CFT faculty. Supervision includes group and individual modalities, as well as live observation, videotape and case report. Later in the program students obtain a 9 -12 month internship (500 client contact hours required) in a community mental health clinic setting, with similar supervision opportunities. Several of these have been identified in the Columbus, OH area.

Financial Assistance

The University and the Department offer a wide variety of financial aid options. There are a limited number of graduate associateships available for top candidates.

Faculty to Student Ratio

The program admits 3 to 4 students per year. Maximum faculty to student ratio is 4 to 1. The program is kept small in order to provide the highest quality education and training.

Suzanne Bartle-Haring

Suzanne Bartle-Haring, PhD
Associate Professor

Dr. Bartle is the CFT program director and a clinical member of AAMFT and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. She received her master's in MFT and Ph.D. in Family Studies at the University of Connecticut. Her research interests include family system differentiation and individuation as they relate to adolescent adjustment, relationship interaction and violence in relationships. She has been published in Family Relations, Family Process, and The American Journal of Family Therapy. She has developed and published an instrument that assesses individuation, The Behavioral and Emotional Reactivity Index. She has also published in the area of methodology and assessment.

Julianne Serovich

Julianne Serovich, PhD
Professor

Dr. Serovich is the department chairperson and a clinical member of and an Approved Supervisor for AAMFT. She received her master's in counseling psychology at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD and her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Georgia. Her research interests include family communication, and privacy and HIV/AIDS. She has published articles in marriage and family therapy journals such as the American Journal of Family Therapy and Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. She has also published in and currently serves as an Associate Editor of Family Relations.

Natasha Slesnick

Natasha Slesnick, PhD
Associate Professor

Dr. Slesnick is a clinical psychologist with PhD and MS degrees in psychology from the University of New Mexico. Her research interests are is on families and adolescents with clinical issues pertaining to alcohol and drug use, homelessness, HIV risk, juvenile delinquency and depression. She has published her research in the Journal of Family Psychology, Journal of Substance Abuse, Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and the American Journal of Family Therapy.
