There is an established link between diet and four of the leading causes of mortality (i.e., heart disease, some types of cancers, stroke, and diabetes) in the United States. Nutrition science studies the role of diet in modulating the balance between health and disease by focusing on this relationship at the cellular, organ, and the whole body levels of individuals, within the community, and for entire populations. A disproportionately high percentage of minorities are affected by these and other life-threatening conditions. However, the number of minority professionals trained in nutrition science and related professions remains quite low. This situation is alarming since professional caregivers often lack knowledge and cultural sensitivity for the unique dietary and lifestyle patterns of minority populations. Increasing 'manpower' from minority professionals represents a necessary strategy to develop more effective interventions that promote healthy dietary behaviors and patterns of physical activity within minority populations.
The objective of the Recruit, Retain, Refresh, Reward (4Rs) Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) is to recruit seven undergraduate minority scholars to The Ohio State University's Human Nutrition program and nurture their academic development and success via intensive faculty mentoring and enrichment activities. In partnership with the highly successful OSU Office of Minority Affairs (OMA), participating students will be prepared for admission and success in post-baccalaureate professional and graduate educational programs. We look forward to recruiting, retaining, and rewarding highly talented and motivated minority students into the OSU Department of Human Nutrition’s 4Rs MSP.
