HN Undergraduate Programs

Didactic Program in Dietetics Option

Program Sheet and Other Requirements

The DPD curriculum can be completed in 12 quarters. Careful planning is required to insure that the courses are scheduled in the appropriate sequence. The program meets or exceeds the knowledge requirements of the Standards of Education as established by The American Dietetic Association.

Students may download the core requirements for the Dietetics Option (pdf file). This program sheet is effective for new students admitted to Education and Human Ecology Summer 2007-summer 2008. Program sheets for continuing students may be obtained in 201 Campbell Hall.

Admission Requirements

The departmental resources available, including faculty, limit admission to the DPD. Admission criteria include completion of 45 credit hours with a 2.5 minimum grade point average (although a higher GPA is more competitive); completion of the following courses or their equivalents: English 110 or 111, Math 116, 130 or 148, Chemistry 101 or 121 and 102 or 122, and Biology 113, and a written goal statement.

Program Requirements

Requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Ecology, with a major in Dietetics are listed in the College of Human Ecology Bulletin and on the "Human Nutrition Major: Dietetics Option" program sheets found on the following pages. A recommended "Sample Plan" is also included which incorporates the specific quarters of offering for courses and their prerequisites.

Graduates of the DPD meet the Knowledge Requirements of The American Dietetic Association, and are eligible to apply for a supervised practice experience: an accredited Dietetic Internship (DI), or an Approved Preprofessional Practice Program (AP4). Admission to supervised practice programs is competitive. Each program strives to select candidates who have the potential to be successful in the supervised practice experience, on the Registration Examination and as a dietetic professional.

Application to supervised practice programs is submitted in February or September with appointments made via computer matching in November and April. The department maintains a file of application materials from many of the current programs. During Autumn quarter, the Program Director offers a course (HUMN NTR 596, Advanced Professional Development) for seniors who wish to apply to practice programs.

The selection process varies among supervised practice programs, but in general, criteria for selection include the following:

It is important to recognize that not all students are accepted into a supervised practice experience. Initial acceptance into a practice program occurs almost exclusively for students with a GPA of 2.7 or higher. Some graduates with lower GPAs have been accepted after 2 or more years of work experience in the dietetics area.

Program Fees

In addition to The Ohio State University tuition and fees (listed in the current Master Schedule of Classes), books, and living expenses, potential fees associated with the DPD may include:
