Introduction

The Nutrition in Industry Option in the Department of Human Nutrition is a program for students with an interest in a career in business organizations that focus on foods, nutrition, and nutraceuticals. Students completing the program with have expertise in the principles and applications nutrition and food sciences, along with a broad, conceptual understanding of business functions and culture. The primary difference between the Nutrition in Industry Option and the long standing Dietetics* and Nutrition* Options is that some courses from the Dietetics and Nutrition options have been replaced with the courses that comprise the General Business Minor or its equivalent. The business support section of the curriculum utilizes the General Business Minor offered by the Fisher College of Business. Students selecting this option also will complete several industry and policy-courses in the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Career Opportunities

The Nutrition in Industry Option will provide students with a more diversified professional background as the scope of nutrition and its central relationship to human health continues to expand. Graduates will be highly competitive for career opportunities in diverse segments food and nutrition industry, and state and federal agencies that regulate the product quality, consumer protection and consumer education. These will include careers in the areas of:

The coupling of knowledge and skills from the core components of the nutrition curricula with conceptual understanding of business functions and culture will enhance the competitiveness of the graduates of this program for entry and advancement in the targeted industries, as well as graduate education.

*The Dietetics Option is designed for students that want to become registered dietitians. The Nutrition Option satisfies the "pre-med" requirements and is designed for students that will go on to Professional Schools such as Medicine and Dentistry, as well as graduate programs in the biomedical sciences.
