The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at Ohio State is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics preparing students to become registered dietitian nutritionists. There are three steps you must successfully complete to accomplish this:
- Complete a dietetics program at an accredited university
- Complete an accredited dietetic internship, such as the Ohio State Human Nutrition Dietetic Internship. Get a complete list of internships from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Pass the National Registration Exam
Registered dietitian nutritionists are the professionals who can develop personalized nutrition plans to prevent or treat various diseases. They are food and nutrition experts who work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, public health, wellness centers, nutrition counseling and education, research and food service management.
Specialization in dietetics
In this competitive dietetics program, you will study a variety of nutrition-focused and science-based courses, including: physical and biological sciences, human anatomy, biochemistry, human physiology, advanced nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service systems and management.

A high percentage of students who successfully complete the dietetics program are then matched to a dietetic internship.
The second step to becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist is a supervised internship. The selection process varies, but generally your GPA, work experience, leadership qualities and personal character are important.
Acceptance into an accredited dietetic internship program is competitive. Our DPD has an excellent track record of helping many students obtain internships. In recent years, about 75 percent of students who apply have been matched to a program of their choice by the time they graduate.
Registration Examination for Dietitians
Successful completion of the bachelor's program and dietetics internship qualifies you to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Between 2012-2014, 90 percent of DPD graduates who took the exam passed on their first attempt.
Registered dietitian nutritionists have a wealth of career options. You might provide specialized diets to hospitalized patients and help them understand how to continue their nutrition therapy after discharge. Public health opportunities could include joining with public officials and nonprofits to fight food insecurity. You might counsel mothers on how to encourage preschoolers to eat wholesome meals. Maybe you'd like to be involved in nutrition research. Or you might oversee that chefs and servers safely store, prepare and serve delicious, health meals.
Prerequisites: Minimum 2.5 GPA (competitive: 3.0 GPA); 15 OSU credit hours; English 1110; Math 1148 or higher; Biology 1113; Chemistry 1210 and 1220
Minimum semester hours to degree completion: 120
Coursework: Physical and biological sciences, human anatomy, biochemistry, human physiology, advanced nutrition, food service systems and management
Course requirements: University courses (50-54 hours), major courses (46 hours), science requirement (17-19), electives (0-6 hours)

Apply to the Didactic Program in Dietetics
Applications are accepted by the first Friday of each semester (Autumn, Spring and Summer). The online application opens approximately one month prior to this deadline.
