Harrison works to prevent blindness through NIH-funded nutrition research
Vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. Harrison, Department of Human Nutrition, focuses on discovering the dietary and genetic factors involved in regulating the bioavailability to the body of vitamin A and carotenoids, precursors of vitamin A. He focuses on the basic science needed to develop dietary strategies for various populations to more easily absorb vitamin A. "The arrival of Professor Harrison further broadens our range of expertise," says Chair Mark Failla, Department of Human Nutrition. "His research will add much to our efforts to define mechanisms by which dietary components and physical activity can prevent--and be used with more traditional approaches to treat--chronic degenerative diseases, such as cancer, cataracts, diabetes, and obesity."
