A better start for children can change families' lives, even neighborhoods. That's the goal as contractors move forward in building the college's new Early Childhood Development Center. Beginning next school year, the center will prepare preschoolers living in the Weinland Park neighborhood east of Ohio State's Columbus campus so they start school ready to succeed. Because the neighborhood is economically challenged, the center will also help the youngsters' families by providing services to support family stability and well-being.
The quality service will start with a family advocacy office where case managers assist with accessing community resources in an atmosphere of respect and collaboration. In addition, the new college's faculty, staff, and students will lend research-based expertise to support needs related to family financial management, housing, job training, and much more.
An on-site health center will offer medical professionals to address family wellness needs. The college's nutrition faculty, staff, and students will teach nutrition to families as they prepare meals in the large kitchen.
The model program, offering opportunities for innovative research and state-of-the-art training for university students, can be reproduced everywhere.
