Groundbreaking expertise in early childhood literacy

McGee uses renowned instructional practices to help children who can't read

Extraordinary results for young children who struggle with reading. This is what Lea McGee achieves with her research-based instructional practices, honed over the years under her major federal grants. We welcomed the former president of the National Reading Conference back to her hometown of Columbus this autumn. As the Marie Clay Endowed Chair in our School of Teaching and Learning, McGee expects to further her reputation for innovative teaching. She previously transformed six preschools where children from low-income families were at risk. More than 75% of those children entered kindergarten with the language and literacy skills needed to be successful readers and writers. She has documented her approaches in her well-known books, including Designing Early Literacy Programs and LiteracyÕs Beginnings, soon to be issued in its fifth edition. Her latest, Transforming Preschools, is due out in early 2007.
