HEC Society honors alumni, faculty who contribute to profession

Each year the Human Ecology Alumni Society selects outstanding alumni and a faculty or staff member to be recognized for their contributions.

This year, the honors were presented June 2 during a luncheon in Columbus. The awards and their recipients are:

Alexander
Karen Alexander

New Leader: Karen Alexander of Lubbock, Texas, received a B.S. and M.S., Family and Consumer Sciences, and Ph.D., Human Development and Family Science. She leads AchieveTexas, the state's career pathways initiative. It received $1.2 million to create and evaluate 16 career clusters that encompass virtually every occupation. She is an assistant professor of family and consumer sciences education, College of Human Sciences, at Texas Tech University. Her teaching and research focus on prosocial behavior in adolescents, family consumer sciences teacher education, and adolescent development issues.


Winegardner Conn
Carole A.
Winegardner Conn

Distinguished Alumna: Carole A. Winegardner Conn of Albuquerque, N.M., received a B.S., Nutrition, Summa Cum Laude.  Conn, Ph.D., RD CSSD, and FACSM, is associate professor of nutrition, University of New Mexico. She recently was certified as a specialist in sports dietetics, a prestigious designation from the American Dietetics Association. Her academic achievements include more than 60 presentations and more than 45 refereed publications. She was named the ADA's outstanding educator in 2004. Recently her research has centered on risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Nigeria.

Dorothy Teater

Meritorious Service: Dorothy Teater of Columbus, M.S., Home Economics, is not only an alumna and retired human ecology faculty member. She continuously supports home economics as a volunteer fund-raiser, donor and advocate. Her tireless efforts include six years as the housing and furnishing specialist in the OSU School of Home Economics. More recently she is providing leadership in the Gamma Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron Alumni and the College of Human Ecology Faculty Retirees.

Jonathan Fox

Faculty: A member of the HEC Alumni Society Board, Jonathan Fox, Ph.D., ensures the connection between the college and its graduates remains strong. His latest project, Scarlet & Gray Financial, pairs students with financial planning practitioners, most of whom are alumni of the OSU Family Resource Management major.  An associate professor of consumer sciences, he has proved his strength as both a teacher and a researcher of consumer finance, financial education, and family financial decision-making.


The College of Education and Human Ecology was established in July 2006. Its mission is to spark holistic solutions to complex social and cultural issues that influence living and learning
