Ohio State has selected a proposal from the College of Education and Human Ecology to nominate for the 2007 C. Peter Magrath/W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award. Only two projects have been selected as Ohio State's representatives for the honor, which is presented by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the Outreach Scholarship Partnership.
EHE is a leader on Engaged Partners-Improving the Lives of Children and Youth.
Ohio State is fostering a bold, new model of public/private partnerships that works rapidly to address complex national problems affecting the success of children and youth. The public/private partnership model is the first of its kind to support laboratory schools covering infancy through grade 12.
First, Ohio State, including the colleges of Education and Human Ecology (EHE), Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MAPS), Biological Sciences, and Engineering collaborated with Battelle and the Franklin County Educational Council in the development of the new Metro School, a small high school designed as an incubator for advancing math, science and technology education.
Second, Battelle's $4 million gift established the Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy housed at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, in partnership with the four Ohio State colleges. The center brings higher education together with leaders in K-12 education, business, technology, and government to develop policies/practices increasing the pipeline for students prepared to become leaders in STEM fields.
Third, the college is building a $10 million Early Childhood Development Center at the economically challenged Weinland Park neighborhood. Columbus Public Schools contributed the $10 million Weinland Park Elementary School that will be jointly administered with the center, and the city of Columbus reconfigured an adjacent park to provide green space and recreation areas. Many partners are ready to serve at the Weinland Park site, including the colleges of EHE, Nursing, Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Social Work, Vet Medicine; public services such as Head Start; and private/corporate donors.
Barbara Ludwig, Outreach and Engagement, Partnerships and Entrepreneurship, wrote the initial proposal. She worked with Janet Ciccone, External Relations, Strategic Communications and Marketing, to expand it for the next phase in the competition.
The other proposal selected by the university's Office of Outreach and Engagement is The Sugar Creek Project. Researchers in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences and local farmers teamed together to study Ohio's second most polluted watershed.
Five regional winners and one national winner will be chosen in the fall from all Magrath nominees. The two OSU nominees will also be recognized at the James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture, Monday, May 7, 3-5 p.m., at the Huntington Club in Ohio Stadium. RSVP to outreach@osu.edu.
