He wasn't your average undergraduate student. First of all, he was 35 when he returned to college. Secondly, he had extensive experience in IT, notably as a systems architect for the eBusiness and Engineering organization at NCR, Dayton, Ohio, and as a highly paid consultant.
Brad A. Henry just graduated spring quarter 2007 with a BS in Technical Education and Training. "I have taken advantage of the experience of going back to college," he says. "I have had some amazing opportunities and doors have opened."
Henry chose honors research and discovered his study topic while in the course Introduction to the Exceptional Child. He said he was inspired by the special needs of ESL children. By combining his interest in technology issues with the need to help ESL teachers better serve their ESL students, he found a winning research topic.
Associate Professor Christopher Zirkle, his advisor in the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, saw Henry's potential and encouraged him to continue on toward the Doctoral Degree in Workforce Development and Education.
"Needless to say, that put an entire new perspective on my educational goals," says Henry, who also volunteers over 200 hours for nonprofits and competes in triathlons and other sports competitions each year. "I'm continuing on [in the graduate program] so that the research I am conducting will be evaluated and used, which puts a huge smile on my face."
Throughout the academic year, honors students work closely with their faculty advisors, conducting their own research to broaden the knowledge base in their fields. Many of the studies are the first of their kind.
