23rd Annual TeachOhio 2008: Teacher recruitment fair brings together candidates, schools
Several of the 40 MSaT pre-service students attending the 2008 TeachOhio event accepted jobs from districts nationwide. The M.Ed. candidates, including the 17 pictured above, are preparing for 7-12 licensure in mathematics or science.
TeachOhio represents the traditional central Ohio kickoff for the teacher recruitment season each year. Jean Wyer, career advisor for the College of Education and Human Ecology, says, "Our goal is to facilitate contacts between teachers and school personnel in April that will result in employment relationships in August."
On April 10, the respected recruitment fair jumpstarted careers for 467 teacher candidates and provided hiring opportunities for 124 schools districts that flocked to the event from 19 states.
Recruiters shared high praise:
- "OSU TeachOhio is the best place to find great teachers!"
- "Candidates were very impressive this year!"
- "Best venue yet!"
Candidates expressed equal enthusiasm for the experience:
- "Wonderful!"
- "Very good job fair. I had apprehensions when I first arrived, but I am very glad I attended! The networking was great!"
- "A great event for something of this magnitude."
TeachOhio is attended by teacher candidates from a consortium of seven universities:
- Ashland University - Columbus campus
- Capital University
- Denison University
- Otterbein College
- The Ohio State University
- Ohio Wesleyan University
- Wittenberg University
Columbus' Aladdin Shrine Center provided a larger venue this year to accommodate the many recruiters. All candidates are education majors, mainly those graduating in spring or summer '08, who will be licensed to teach by autumn 2008. Alumni are welcome, as are current students. Thirty-one volunteers helped facilitate the event.
For the first time, attendees could choose from three workshops on career issues:
- "Employment Contract Basics" Presented by Rhonda Johnson, President, Columbus Education Association
- "Making a Home Away from Home: Issues Regarding Relocation and Reciprocity" Presented by James Butler, Recruitment Specialist, Polk County Schools, Florida
- "Renewal and Reciprocity: Updating your Ohio Teaching License" Presented by Tom Bordenkircher, Visiting Professor, Educational Policy and Leadership, The Ohio State University
Current students who attended the workshops had this to say:
- "Very impressive and informative"

- "Helped me out greatly!"
