Fourteen Education and Human Ecology are among the 73 Buckeye student-athletes who earned the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Big Ten Conference, the largest group of recipients from any school.

The new award is given to student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year (excluding summer school). Recipients must be letter winners in at least their second year at their institution.

In February 2008, Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the new conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program.

Many of the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award winners received additional conference accolades throughout the academic year. They included the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for gymnast Alyssa Meyer of Chesterfield, Mo., who graduated in June with a bachelor's degree in exercise science from the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services.

Meyer, a specialist in floor and bars, and D.R. Ebner of Hershey, Pa., an offensive lineman in football, both graduated with 4.0 GPAs. Ebner received his bachelor's degree in exercise science at the autumn quarter 2008 commencement. He was also selected for the 2009 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society earlier this year.
